INTERVIEW - PAUL CATALANOTTO - INDIE HORROR DIRECTOR - THE THING INSIDE US

 

A salute to everyone reading this interview. First things first, I hope each of the person reading this reading this interview has had a merry christmas with your loved ones. OK, now regariding our subject, I want to indtroduce you people today's interviewee: PAUL CATALANOTTO, an indie filmmaker, director of films such as Proof Of The Devil, Scrilege and his latest work THE THING INSIDE US, which is the matter of our talk. As I always write,  this blog and these interviews specifically seeks to provide valuable info to beginners or budding filmmakers from people who have lived the experience to make a movie and know what things to prioritize and what not when making a limited budget film in all its differentes phases.

PAUL fits in this goal because he knows perfectly those things, in each of his movies he has experienced situations that has forced him to dig deep to look for creative solutions. His latest film has been made with no crew, only he and his actors and all this came to surface because of the suggestion of one of his students, ah, I had not said yet, PAUL teaches film production at the university, so in one of his classes that challenge turned into a  goal for his career and the result was THE THING INSIDE US, a movie that tells the story of a married couple that during the strike of a strange disease in the world, the wife experiment a "sleepwalking" condition and doctors can't help her, so the husband decide to document her condition through video record all her steps... What he finds could not only destroy his relationship, but the world itself.

The movie had its VOD and DIGITAL release on October 19, 2021 by High Octane Pictures. PAUL let me talk with him about the obstacles he faced off during the making of, the doubt moments that arise in every film production, how to focus on the goals, he gave us advice regarding how to shoot a movie with no crew and with no money practically. INTERVIEW - MAXI CONTENTI - INDIE HORROR DIRECTOR - THE LAST MATINEE (AL MORIR A LA MATINÉE)

A salute to everyone reading this interview. To Return to the 90's when cinemas were the recint where our imagination could fly off watching the renaissance of sci fi movies or be frightened by the monsters or killers from horror movies and sometimes drop out a shy tear watching the drama or comedy stories, all that and more represented the cinemas back in the 90's, time where THE LAST MATINEE takes place, a story about that, vivid experiences in a cinema, but in this particular movie that "vivid" experiences gets another level, a too real level. The movies tells the story of a hooded serial killer that gets in a cinema and inside of it unleashes all his evil and commit a serie of murders all this meanwhile a group of teenagers trying to escape from him.

This uruguayan Movie is directed by MAXI CONTENTI, and I had the chance to cha with him about the behind of the movie making, the methods, the techniques, the obstacles, the disillusions, the happiness, the doubts, all those "normal" sensations when approaching the building up of a movie. MAXI CONTENTI is from uruguay and from a very young age he knew he wanted to be in the film industry and become a great movie director.

INTERVIEW - MATHIEU GOMPEL - INDIE HORROR SCREENWRITER - THE OWNERS

A salute to everyone reading this interview. MATHIEU GOMPEL is a french screenwriter who complete two works shot as a feature films and those are: "THE DREAM KIDS" and the one that made us talk "THE OWNERS", starred by Maisie Williams (Games Of Thrones), He is co-writer alongside the director Julius Berg. The movie follows A group of friends think they found the perfect easy score - an empty house with a safe full of cash. But when the elderly couple that lives there comes home early the tables are suddenly turned. As a deadly game of cat and mouse ensues the would-be thieves are left to fight to save themselves from a nightmare they could never have imagined.

The movie is an adaptation from the graphic novel Une nuit de pleine lune by Hermann and Yves H. The movie was out by RLJ Entertainment on September 4, 2020 on VOD, Digital formats and Limited Theaters and on october 20, 2020 in DVD and Bluray formats in USA. In the UK had a Digital release date on February 22, 2021 and a DVD release date on March 1, 2021 by Signature Entertainment.

I had the chance to talk with MATHIEU about his career, the reason to become a writer, the methods he uses when it comes to write a script, the ins and outs during the adaptation of the movie, the way the creative work was distributed all concerned to the creation process and the successful way to make scripts. INTERVIEW - AARON FJELLMAN - INDIE HORROR FILMMAKER - CAGED

 

A salute to everyone reading this interview. Grew up in the suburbs of Los Angeles, got a sweet candy taste from Horror movies when he was just a boy roaming around in the local video store, he wanted to shoot a high-level budgeted indie horror film first, but the stumbings lead him out to his feature film directorial debut and word-worthy film: "CAGED". I am talking about AARON FJELLMAN.

"CAGED" is the story of a man who is wrongly convicted for the murder of his wife, locked in his cell he must fight against his inner demons and a prison guard unchaining delusional passes in his mind. You can check out the note HERE.

We had a well-worthy chat about the in and outs to try to shoot his first feature film, why he decides to shoot it in certain particular  style, the whys, those little bit goldy details about why a filmmaker does what he does on his movie, That information my friends is bread freshly baked, there are filmmakers that are reserved about giving extra details, just the enough, but there are others that draw you the entire landscape, one of them is AARON. Widely he exposed to us why made this movie, with this particular plot, with this particular mood, how he was blessed to have that amazing cast and crew, the handicaps found during all the stages to create a movie, I mean, you have gold at your disposal, is up to you to take it.

When the childhood dreams flourish up on the adult stage and become reality, surely is a thrilling feeling. Our today's interviewee could descibre us that feeling. ZACH ZORBA, from Alaska, but lived in Israel and grew up in Seattle, took a decision, a transcendental one, when he was barely a kid, he wanted to make film no matter the idea about the how, was a completely mystery to him.

The film has talented actors such as Kane Hodder, Felissa Rose and other great actors. INTERVIEW - BRANDON CHRISTENSEN - INDIE HORROR FILMMAKER - Z

In 2018 "Still/Born" stroke in different platforms including SHUDDER and got amazing reviews, many of them named it "Sharp and shocking". That was the first kick of today's interviewee: BRANDON CHRISTENSEN, born and raised in Canada, since child found that films would be his passion and since then has done all possible to get it and has got it so far. "Still/Born" was his debut and went on with "Z" an striking horror movie about a boy and his "imaginary" friend, I cant's say more about, you must go and watch it. believe me, you won't regret it at all. This film was out in 2020 with big top reviews also.

As I said before, I had the honor to chat with BRANDON and I asked him about his last released film "Z", the creating process, the story inspirations and those obstacles that every director have to overcome during the making of a film to get it finish or as he says "Get it good enough", but, every director has their own anecdotes that serves as examples for those newbies filmmakers out there and that's what this blog is about. We also talk about his upcoming horror film "SUPERHOST", you people have faith in me when I say that we will hear a lot from BRANDON in a no far future...

INTERVIEW - CLAYTON WITMER - INDIE HORROR FILMMAKER - THE ARBORS

 

"THE ARBORS" arrived on 26 march, 2021 on several streaming platforms backed by Gravita Ventures. The film follows the unsettling events that our lead character Ethan experiments after encouteres off "face to face" with a certain creature-aracnid monster type thing that strings a series of mysterious murders in the dreary small town he lives, all this happens while he wants to keep ties with his borther. Obviously there is much more in the story but you will find it out when you go and watch the movie, I know you people will. The film has received great reviews from various critics spectres and because of that and other things I'm sure that  this week's interviewee's name will resonate in the future: "CLAYTON WITMER". Believe me.

From canada to the big leagues, CLAYTON attended the UNCSA and with a group of talented friends from the school embarked in the journey of trying to make a feature film... In this talk he told us the vicissitudes he went through to get his dream work on the screen.

INTERVIEW - ELZA KEPHART - INDIE HORROR FILMMAKER - SLAXX

 

Creating controversy, knocking down on the first hit, that's how one must to enter into any place in the world, in few words, being bold. Even though my interviewee today has shot two films besides the last one, this lasting one clearly tries to amplify a protest voice against the comsumption or how she said "I’d like people to think about their position in the chain of production, exploitation and consumption." Great, right? That's why I am grateful for the time she gave me to chat, and I say again, thanks ELZA KEPHART, really. her last film and the matter of this interview is SLAXX, its storyle says: "When a possessed pair of jeans begins to kill the staff of a trendy clothing store, it is up to Libby, an idealistic young salesclerk, to stop its bloody rampage". A film that under the sub genre horror-comedy gives us a critic about the social media, consumption and the humanity mechanization only to become us more and more consumers.

INTERVIEW - SHAWN LINDEN - HUNTER HUNTER'S DIRECTOR - INDIE HORROR FILMMAKER

I had the chance and fortune to chat with SHAWN LINDEN, a canadian filmmaker, director and writer of films such as NOBODY, THE GOOD LIE and HUNTER HUNTER, his latest masterpiece. Hi folks! Director of photography, cinematographer or D.P, as whatever you decide to tag them, , they perform a prime matter when we talk about the visual tone of a film. That said, it's a pleasure to me to post interview i did to belgian FILIP VANDEWAL, a experienced D.P with tons of movies right upon his back all over the world. Movies such as THE LAST LIGHT, THE FUNHOUSE MASSACRE, CAMP COLD BROOK, THE OPEN HOUSE (Netflix released in 2018), HONEST THIEVES and the one brings us here WITNESS INFECTION.

WITNESS INFECTION is horror - zombie - comedy released on march 31th digitally, FILIP explains us as a teacher liberate his wisdom over his students the different approaches he boards the vary projects he's done so far, depending budget, location, visual tone desired by the director among other aspects. Really, it's a bunch of precious information about how to get a good visual film tone with limited resources, priceless for the indie filmmakers out there, how to get away of different problems during the shooting, he shared with us some challenges he encountered during the making of WITNESS INFECTION.
